Emerald Ash Borer In Sault Ste. Marie

The confirmed presence of the emerald ash borer (EAB), in Sault Ste. Marie, stresses the importance of general public and stakeholder education on invasive alien species in the Algoma region. It is likely that the beetle is being spread, not only by natural means, but also through the movement of infested ash products including firewood, nursery stock and logs. Therefore, making sure that you are aware of the signs and symptoms of EAB infestation, to allow for early detection, is vital in helping reduce the spread of this invasive species.

Please visit the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) website for more information on EAB and who to contact if you suspect an ash tree may be infested.

To learn more about the signs and symptoms of EAB infestation, log on to Module 9 of our online modules through the link at the bottom of this page.

Invasive Alien Species Public Outreach Program

Invasive Alien Species (IAS) are costing the country an estimated $13-$34.5 billion annually due to the significant ongoing threats that they pose to many forest and aquatic ecosystems. With Ontario being the final destination for the majority of Canadian imports, it is at high risk for introduction of invasive species in containers with imported goods or in ship ballast water. science enterprise Algoma (seA) has established a pubic outreach program with intentions of educating the public as well as different stakeholders and educators about invasive species.

Funded by the Invasive Alien Species Partnership Program (IASPP), the program involves nine modules that provide detailed information about invasive species, focusing on their introduction and identification, jurisdictional responsibilities towards their management, and current research involved in controlling their populations. These modules are being made available with hopes of increasing public awareness of invasive species, therefore increasing identification abilities and decreasing their spread.
